Under My Skin

Artist Yang Xinyan Alexis

Age 24

Medical condition End-stage renal failure

Medium Photography print on vinyl, pen illustration

Originally conceived as a parodical response to the “A4 Waist Challenge”, it evolved into a personal work on being honest about the verisimilitude of my existence. We are aware that we exist on borrowed time. But it is not enough for me to be alive; I want to live among the living. For years I kept it hidden under my skin. As mortality salience looms closer, I feel compelled to earnestly face my vulnerabilities and scars. My body, even with all its flaws and dependencies, still has the capacity to ambulate, sense and love.

Special thanks to Emilyn Cheong, Dr Sharon Koh and Wesley Loh.
